Sonia calls Captain on Sept 18 to finalise candidate

Chandigarh : Congress president Sonia Gandhi has called a meeting on September 18 in New Delhi to decide the name of candidate for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll for which the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has been invited. Punjab Congress has sent a panel of names to the high command for her consideration and selection. Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar has confirmed the panel, but refused to disclose the names. Sources said that in this panel the name of Partap Singh Bajwa is also included.

The last date to file the nomination is September 22. Although no party has yet announced its candidate, the Congress and the BJP are currently looking at each other’s aspirants. Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar said the party president will choose the candidate for the upcoming by-poll in Gurdaspur. He said that the Congress has many efficient and capable faces in Gurdaspur area. “During the short span of six months of the Congress regime under the visionary and charismatic leadership of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, a number of path breaking initiatives have been launched,” he said.

DEO held meeting civil, police and ARO s

Gurdaspur: In an order to conduct free an fair poll in Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency, the District Electoral Officer Gurloveleen Singh Sidhu held at meeting with the civil, police and Assistant Returning Officers (ARO s) in Panchayat Bhawan here on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police Batala Opinderjit Singh Ghumman, ADC Jagwinderjit Singh Sandhu, ADC Gurmeet Singh Multani, all ARO and respective DSPs . While addressing the meeting DEO Sidhu said that model code of conduct would be implemented in its true spirit and no boyd would allow to violate the code of conduct. He informed the meeting that flying squads, surveillance teams, video surveillance teams, video accounting teams and MCMC (Medium Certification and Monitoring Committee) teams have already been constituted in both districts. The MCMC will monitor paid news in the print and electronic media.

He said that nominations would start from September 15 with the issuing of Gazette notification which would continue till September 22 and candidates can withdraw their nominations on September 27.The counting would held on October 17, he said.

He ordered all government officers and employees not to leavetheir station without getting prior approval from their respective officers and they will not be expected from their assigned election duty at any cost.
