SAD-BJP Rally Is A Sure Sign Of Desperation - 21/02/2008

PRESS RELEASE

SAD-BJP Rally Is A Sure Sign Of Desperation

That the ruling alliance wishes to demonstrate its strength in Delhi to mark its first year in power or, more likely, the appointment of Sukhbir Badal as the President of the SAD, is a sure mark of a Government desperately short of ideas, unable to deliver quantifiable and visible results.

For a party that was not even able to convince the people of Punjab that it deserved a majority in its own right it now finds itself torn between the twin planks of satisfying both its own support base and, for the first time in Mr Badal’s 4 tenures as Chief Minister, that of its ideologically divergent junior partner.

Mr Badal knew that the assignment of heavy-weight portfolios to the BJP would only pacify the partner for so long. Little did anyone expect the absolute silence of the BJP in the face of numerous extremist provocations. Clearly, the pleasures of office matter much more to the BJP than protecting the sentiments of the minority community in Punjab.

Where are the BJP voices on farmer debt relief?

Instead of protesting against the UPA’s policies and adopting a two-faced approach to Dr Manmohan Singh, the SAD should be garlanding the Prime Minister for the record enhancement of the MSP of wheat, both in absolute terms (Rs.250/kwt) and percentage terms (33%).

Where is:

1. the promised miraculous transformation of the economy?

2. the state’s independent support to the Punjab farmer. Why can there not be a state bonus for wheat and paddy?

3. the real estate boom that helped so many farmers escape from debt and that would even today be a reality had it not been for this government’s misguided actions.

Was it not the same CM in his third term who had declared that “farmer debt relief is not possible”?

Was Mr Badal even able to extract even Rs.1 farmer debt relief from the NDA government?

Where was the SAD’s stand on farmer debt relief when the country witnessed record farmer suicides during the last NDA government?

The fact is that debt relief for farmers is at the top of the current UPA agenda and the package is well on the way to becoming reality not because of public posturing by the SAD-BJP alliance but because of the need of the hour.

Try as they might to take credit for the forthcoming package, the SAD-BJP alliance will once again fail miserably, but not in numbers for the entire bureaucracy is working to high jack the state’s transport and countless crores are be spent to induce participation. It will fail because Messrs. Badal have lost the argument in Punjab.

Sukhbir Badal states that this government will demonstrate its anger in Delhi, yet he would be well advised to remember that anger is the first symptom of guilt and failure.

And yes there will be a winner from the SAD-BJP rally. It will be the Congress party, the prime mover of the proposed debt relief package. The loser? Undoubtedly the SAD-BJP alliance which is so desperate and devoid of policy initiatives that it attempts to steal an idea from the opposition!!
