Fifth Junior National Soft Tennis Championship begins in Ludhiana - 26/06/2009

LUDHIANA, June 26 : The fifth Junior National Soft Tennis Championship starts in Ludhiana from today. The five day event is being organized by the Punjab State Soft Tennis Association (PSSTA) in collaboration with the Amateur Soft Tennis Federation of India (ASTFI) at Punjab Agricultural University grounds. It will conclude on June 30.

The championship would be inaugurated by the former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition in Punjab assembly, Ms. Rajinder Kaur Bhattal alongwith the Ludhiana MP, Mr. Manish Tewari and the PAU Vice Chancellor Dr. M.S. Kang.

Addressing a press conference here today, the president of the federation Mr. Raju PArmar, the Secretary General Mr. J.K. Khodadhra and the Punjab President, Mr. Jassi Khangura said that over 400 players from 21 states across the country are participating in the event.

Mr. Parmar said, under the leadership and guidance of Mr. Khangura the game was fast picking up in Punjab. He observed, the state had tremendous talent and potential. He said, he was confident that Punjab would be producing international level players in this game. He congratulated Mr. Khangura for popularizing the game within a couple of years after its introduction in the state.

Soft Tennis was introduced in India in 2002. The ASTFI is now affiliated with the International Soft Tennis Federation, Japan and the Asian Soft Tennis Federation, Japan. It has been recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Indian Olympic Association. It has 23 state and UT associations affiliated to it.

The Soft Tennis finds its origin in Japan after the missionaries introduced lawn tennis suited to the physique of the people of the countries like Japan, China and Korea, who found the traditional version of the game (lawn tennis) slightly difficult. It is played with a soft ball and lighter racket.

Soft Tennis has already been introduced in the Asian Games since 1990 and it become official Asian Games Sport in 1994. Indian Soft Tennis teams will participate in the sixteenth Asian Games being held in 2010 in Chaina.

Mr. Khangura and Mr. Parmar promised that they would ensure that the Indian players come out with flying colours in the international events particularly the Asian Games. Mr. Khangura said, he had found Punjabi players quite robust about the game and winning medal would certainly not be difficult for them. “I expect our players doing well in the Asian Games”, Mr. Khangura remarked.
