Khangura: The "HOUSE OF BADALS" is destined to fail - 06/12/2009

CHANDIGARH 6 December 2009: With the Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Badal, about to join for the first time the Punjab Vidhan Sabha as an elected MLA, Qila Raipur MLA Jassi Khangura today had a dig at the Badals for promoting their own clan and turning the Shiromani Akali Dal into a family run institution. He remarked that every seventh Akali legislator in Vidhan Sabha is a Badal or closely related to the Badals, before adding “In reality the Punjab Vidhan Sabha has become the “House of Badals”.

He stressed “The number of Badals is now sufficient to complete the quorum for a wedding party."

In a statement issued here today, Khangura revealed that of the 49 Akali legislators 7 are related to the CM of which regrettably 5 are in the cabinet. This is an insult to the intelligence and the capabilities of those Akali MLAs not lucky enough to be related to the CM.”

Khangura said one of the two relatives currently left out of the Cabinet, Bikramjit Majithia, remained a minister until he had to make way for his brother-in-law Sukhbir Badal, although Majithia still remains an extra-constitutional authority, more powerful than any minister in the cabinet, courtesy his Deputy Chief Minister brother-in-law.

Khangura stressed “Not being content with dynastic rule alone the Badals are making it abundantly clear that to get ahead in the SAD it is much wiser to marry well and to be directly or indirectly related to the CM. I regret that after 50 years in politics the CM only feels secure in the presence of his relatives. Why does he distrust so much those Akali MLAs that are not related to him?”

Khangura quipped that surely the presence of so many Badals on the front bench will be confusing for the speaker and the legislators and suggested that consideration may be given to abbreviations B1, B2, B3, etc…

The Qila Raipur MLA stressed “I am sure the progressive growth of the Badal kindred in the assembly will continue unabated”, whilst remarking, “we may be critical of Mr Badal for ignoring Punjab, but we must appreciate and admire his concern for his own clan and on that count Mr Badal scores full marks”.

Khangura added that historically numerous tyrants including Iraq’s Sadam Hussein and Haiti’s Papa Doc Duvalier had tried to cling on to power by appointing family members to the most influential posts, but, fortunately, they eventually failed, as would Mr Prakash Singh Badal.

Khangura sought the CM’s assurance that he will not burden the house with more Badals and relatives and suggested that the CM might now want to appoint ministers more on their proven administrative and policy making skills and less on their blood lineage.

Khangura closed “Sadly it is likely that competency will never a consideration for S. Prakash Singh Badal in appointing ministers lest any non-family member acquire an aura that threatens the very dynastic rule that he seeks to propagate. You can never imagine a situation where the CM would ever welcome into his party any of his most vocal opponents from today’s opposition benches.”
