JALANDHAR: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday arrested Amritsar-based industrialist and former Akali leader Jagjeet Singh Chahal near SAS Nagar in the money laundering case registered against him in the multi-crore Bhola synthetic drug racket. He was out on bail in the case. Chahal was not appearing before the agency despite its having sent him show-cause notices in the last six months, officials said. A team of ED sleuths had laid a trap to arrest Chahal on Monday. He has been brought here. He would be produced in a Patiala court on Tuesday.

Chahal, who owns pharmaceutical companies in Baddi at Himachal Pradesh, was booked in May 2013 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act at the Banur police station in Patiala, for his alleged link with the racket. Seven luxury cars and assets of seven private firms he owns worth ₹120 crore were attached. The ED after a yearlong investigation had ordered the attachment under Section 5 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after Chahal failed to show the source of money he used for purchasing the properties.

MOHALI COURT REJECTS ED PLEA FOR CASE TRANSFER

A SAS Nagar court on Monday rejected the Enforcement Directorate’s application for shifting the Bhola drug case from SAS Nagar to Patiala. The court adjourned the hearing to June 1. The ED had moved the plea as a similar case is going on in Patiala and it wanted both the cases to be heard at one place.
