Moga : A local Akali leader and Sarpanch of Buttar Kalan village in Moga district Jaswinder Singh alias Shinder, and a few of his associates were booked on the charge of liquor smuggling, the police said here today.
Addressing mediapersons, DSP (D) Sarbjit Singh Bahia said 63 cases (756 bottles) of country-made liquor were recovered from a tubewell room on the land taken on lease by Jaswinder for cultivation.
The Akali leader was allegedly smuggling liquor from many years under the “protection” of senior party leadership of the area.
The DSP said at least five cases of liquor were smuggled from Haryana and the rest from nearby districts. He was selling the smuggled liquor in Buttar Kalan and nearby villages with the help of local conduits.
One of his conduits, Gurmail Singh Ginda, was arrested by the police from the spot. Sarpanch Jaswinder managed to flee.
After preliminary interrogation of Ginda, the police registered a case under various sections of the Excise Act against the sarpanch and his associates Gurmail Singh Ginda, Jaskaran Singh Jassi, Harminder Singh Kala, Amandeep Singh and Goldi. The DSP said the accused would be arrested soon.
