FARIDKOT: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and mill owner Ramandeep Singh has been sent to Modern Jail, Faridkot, after an additional district and sessions court dismissed his appeal, challenging his conviction by a lower court in January 2017. Ramandeep, a former president of Truck Union, Faridkot, was jailed for a year after five cheques of around ₹2 crore that he had issued to Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation (Punsup) in January 2013, bounced.
In the 2011-2012 paddy season, Punsup district manager gave a contract for custom-mulling of paddy of around ₹2 crore to Farid Cotton Ginning and Rice Factory that Ramandeep owned.
The mill had to convert around 73,000-quintal paddy into the rice after customisation and deliver it to Punsup. The firm neither delivered the rice nor returned the paddy to Punsup.
Ramandeep issued five cheques worth ₹2.06 crore (three of ₹50 lakh each and two of ₹28 lakh each) to Punsup. These were dishonoured.
In January 2017, a lower court sentenced Ramandeep to oneyear in jail and fined him ₹10,000 for each of five cases of cheques that were dishonoured. He was bailed out.
