Bathinda rape case: Accused arrested, sent to police custody

BATHINDA: The accused in the Rama Mandi rape case was presented in the court and has been taken on police remand for a day.

Medical examination of the accused was conducted at Bathinda Civil Hospital and he was presented in the court by GRP, Bathinda police station. The police was able to arrest the accused immediately after there were protests in the region by angry residents of the area.

It should be noted that a youth raped a six-year-old girl in his neighbourhood and threw her near bushes where she was bleeding profusely. As soon as the news of the incident spread, the residents of the place came out on roads protesting and blocked rail traffic by protesting on the railway lines due to which trains had to be deferred. Seeing this, the accused ran away but the police arrested him after a team of three police personnel was formed and DSP of GRP from Ferozepur also reached Rama Mandi to nab the accused.

Finally, the accused identified as Akhilesh was arrested and was sent for a medical examination and was produced in the court later on. He was sent to police remand for a day from here.

In another development in the case, a case has been registered against over 100 people who tried to block the railway traffic. Railway police stated that the protestors stopped the railway traffic for hours and some trains had to cancelled also. The railway department has suffered losses worth crores of rupees due to this. It should be noted that among those who were protesting at the railway tracks, women were in majority.
