LUDHIANA: Harpreet Singh, alias Happy, a resident of Makkar Colony in Dhandari Kalan, and his co-accused Rama Devi, were convicted and awarded seven years imprisonment in a rape case.
Pronouncing the judgement, Additional Sessions Judge Surinderpal Kaur sentenced accused Happy to rigorous imprisonment while the co-accused Rama Devi, charged with abetment under Section 120-B of IPC, was ordered to undergo simple imprisonment for the same duration.
Rejecting the plea of leniency raised by the accused persons, the judge observed that in view of the nature of the offence, the accused persons were not entitled to any leniency.
The accused persons were booked under sections 376, 511 and 120-B by Focal Point Police on the basis of the victim’s statement. During evidence, the charges of rape were established against the main accused and further corroborated by the report of the chemical examiner.
According to the prosecution, the woman Rama Devi, a neighbor of the victim of rape, had called the girl inside her house where main accused Happy was already present. Happy clicked some pictures of the girl on his mobile phone and later raped her. The victim raised an alarm and was rescued by her mother, the prosecution maintained.
