JALANDHAR: CBI sleuths cracked a big racket involving high scale corruption in the Income Tax Department with the arrest of Assistant Income Tax Commissioner Ludhiana, PK Bhattacharya, and a reputed chartered accountant of Jalandhar.
The CBI team comprising twelve to fifteen officials, all from Chandigarh, arrived in the city late last night and raided the house of Ashwin Gupta, a reputed CA of the city at Green Park colony here.
The sleuths after questioning him seized a sum of Rs. 6.50 lakh alleged to be a part of the deal reached between the AITC PK Bhattacharya and a businessman of Ludhiana.
Since Bhattacharya had been in Jalandhar some times back, Gupta had developed good relations with him. The businessman in order to get some IT problem sorted out approached Gupta for a compromise and subsequently a deal was alleged to be struck for Rs. 10 lakh to settle the IT dispute.
The CBI sleuths seized some computers, laptops and important documents also from the residence of the CA running a chartered accountants company in the name and style of K Ashwini Gupta and Associates in the city having big industrial houses and business entrepreneurs as his clients.
The CBI officials refused to divulge any kind of information but said that both the persons would be produced in the CBI court at Patiala to extract more information about the racket being run to bribe the high officials of the IT department using the services of chartered accountant.
