Amritsar’s shame: Auto rickshaw driver confesses molesting Danish student

AMRITSAR: Twenty-one-year old Vicky Kumar, who was arrested Sunday for molesting a 25-year-old Danish student who had arrived in Amritsar late Friday night, has confessed to his crime. He is habitual sex offender and earlier complaints have been registered against him with the police, said the police sources.

He confessed that he was alone and even made phone calls to his friends for the nefarious act that he had evil designs to rape the girl. “But the brave girl raised the alarm and she saved herself by hitting him all over and cried out for the help’’, said the police. She was assaulted in the auto-rickshaw and her clothes were torn badly and she reached her hotel room in shabby condition.

The girl is a research scholar working on religious studies and with this purpose she was in the city and was alone when she was attacked and molested by Vicky, a resident of the Islamabad locality. The incident happened at the busy railway station road and no one came to her help when she raised the alarm, she stated in the FIR registered with the police.

The girl was so shocked that she left the country Sunday only but before that she helped the police to identify the accused following an identification parade. She told the police that never in life she had thought that an auto driver will try to advantage on busy street in the city like this. She has supposedly left her research project to head for back home, stated the police.

The police are investigating the crime and also looking into if more than one person was involved.  The case has once again raised the issue of security of the foreign tourists in the city and the general women who are subjected to the daily routine of eve-teasing, molestation, stalking by the goonda elements.

The police have failed to provide security at the areas surrounding the Railways station where such incidents take place on regular basis, what would be the condition of the residents in the other parts of the city, it can only be imagined. Meanwhile the Danish girl had informed her embassy in Delhi and handed over the FIR registered to the officials for further follow-up.
