Balbir Sidhu agrees with expert’s recommendation for increasing legal age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21 years

Chandigarh : A consultation was held here on Sunday on ‘Why legal age to buy tobacco and legal nicotine products should be increased beyond 18 years?’ It was organised jointly by Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health PGIMER, Chandigarh, State Tobacco Control Cell(STCC) Punjab and Strategic Institute for Public Health Education and Research (SIPHER). Experts express concern about danger to the health of youth because of the impending epidemic of tobacco use, hukkah bars and e-cigarettes Balbir Singh Sidhu, Health Minister, Punjab agreed to recommend increase in age to buy and use tobacco and legal nicotine products. Public health experts, police officials, officials from local government department, State Tobacco Control Cell Punjab, IMA Chandigarh and NGOs joined the consultation held in the School of Public Health PGI. Health Minister Punjab assured the house that existing anti-tobacco laws will be implemented strongly and strictly.He also agreed with the proposal that the legal age to buy tobacco shall be increased beyond the present limit of 18 years. He also assured to get expedited the process of licensing the tobacco vendors.
