SANGRUR: Agitated over the delay in delivery of urea, farmers on Monday blocked the PatialaSangrur road for several hours.

Farmers, in large numbers, gathered in Sangrur in the afternoon and blocked National Highway- 64 near Shaheed Bha g at Singh Chowk and Barnala Junction to protest against the non-availability of the fertiliser.

The protesting far mers accused the government of not taking their demands seriously and urged it to ensure proper supply of the much-needed fertiliser, warning that the shortage of urea at this time would hit the production of wheat.

“For the past couple of weeks, farmers have been facing harassment and inconvenience due to the wrong policies of the government,” said Jonny, a farmer from Mangwal.

Another farmer Avtar Singh said, “Despite repeated protests, the state government has not initiated any steps to end urea shortage. They are doing this to provide benefit to politicians and big dealers who are involved in the black marketing of urea.”

However, deputy commissioner Arshdeep Singh Thind claimed that there was no shortage of the fertiliser in the district and the administration had enough stock to supply to farmers of entire Sangrur.

“There is no shortage on the part of the government. We have distributed the fertiliser on Monday and another batch will reach on Tuesday. Directions have been issued to officers concerned for supply of the fertiliser to the farmers,” he added.
