New Delhi : A day after Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal made a renewed bid to seek release of 13 terrorists convicted to life term, former Punjab Director General of Police KPS Gill has warned against any such move.

He said: "There should be no premature release of any convict. Let them undergo their mandated punishment. These people have links with Islamic terrorists. It is dangerous to even talk about premature release.

Gill, who served as DGP during the terrorism days in Punjab, also countered the claim of Sukhbir on the release of convicts in the past. Sukhbir had yesterday justified his demand saying: "I am referring to Wassan Singh Zaffarwal and Dr Sohan Singh. How were they released?" Both were associated with the Khalistan movement.

Gill said: "Dr Sohan Singh was never convicted, so there was no question of releasing him prematurely".

Punjab's list given to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) seeking premature release for 13 life convicts includes the names of Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora, both convicted for the assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh.

Gill, during whose tenure Beant Singh was assassinated in August 1995, had in 2012, opposed the efforts of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for clemency to Balwant Singh Rajoana, another convict in the assassination case.
