Sangrur : A large number of anganwadi workers and helpers, led by Anganwari Mulazam Union Punjab (CITU) district president Gurmail Kaur, today burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protest the non-fulfillment of their demands.
Earlier, they gathered at the office of the Child Development Project Officer, from where they took out a protest march till the traffic lights chowk near the main bus stand here.
Their demands include the regularisation of their services, promotion of a helper to anganwari worker after three years’ experience and the implementation of the pension scheme.
The workers also gheraoed the car of former SAD minister Gobind Singh Kanjhla for about 20 minutes at the chowk after he “forcibly” tried to pass his vehicle from where they were protesting.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gurpreet Singh Dhindsa along with his team reached there and tried to pacify both sides. Dhindsa called district president Gurmail Kaur and talked to her and urged Kanjhla to sit inside the vehicle. Kanjhla left the venue when the protesters started burning the PM’s effigy.
Gurmail said if their demands were not met, they would intensify their agitation.
