PATIALA: A man said to be a local Akali leader allegedly fired gunshots outside the prestigious Punjab Public School (PPS) in Nabha on Tuesday evening, injuring a villager. Police said an old rivalry between two school students, who had fought each other over some matter on the campus, is suspected to be the motive.

The incident occurred around 6:30 pm when Bhupinder Singh, a former member of the Dakala zila parishad and father of one of the students, fired his gun at a group supporting the other student. However, none of the students was injured. An eyewitness at the scene told the police more than six rounds of bullets were fired. Two cars were also damaged in the incident.

One of the bullets hit a resident of Railmajra village, Gurmohan, who was moved to the Nabha government hospital where doctors referred him to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the parents of the students arrived at the scene and had a fight. “The school had expelled the two students from the hostel last month,” he added.
