Abohar : Senior activists of the SAD and the BJP, who had been keeping their fingers crossed over electing new municipal council officials for the last six weeks, today sparred at a meeting held in the Town Hall to discuss problems relating to sewerage and water supply.
Learning that BJP councillors and organisational leaders were exclusively holding meeting with senior officials of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board (PWSSB) in the council, scores of SAD activists thronged the venue and accused the BJP leadership of betraying the “coalition dharma” by keeping the “big brothers” away.
Some of the SAD workers alleged that the BJP leaders were responsible for the collapse of sanitation, sewerage and water supply facilities as they had given contracts to their favorites who usurped funds than serving people. A block president of the BJP alleged that the Akalis had looted the state with open hands. SAD workers relented as officials agreed to have separate meeting with them at the party’s local office.
Later, Congress workers led by district vice-president Vimal Thatai and some councillors met the officials and explained problems being faced by residents in some colonies.
PWSSB Chief Engineer RK Goyal discussed the situation over the phone with Leader of the Opposition Sunil Jakhar. He assured that super suction jet machines would land here on Monday to begin de-silting the main sewerage pipelines for which Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had granted Rs 55 lakh. He said Executive Engineer RK Verma would stay at Abohar for two days each week to monitor the drive for improving sewerage and drinking water services.
