PYC president holds protest at Goraya grain market

Jalandhar : Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary along with youth Congress workers sat on dharna at grain Market Goraya to protest against the lackluster and dillydallying approach of the SAD-BJP government in the state towards the problems faced by the farmers in procurement and payment of their yield.
While addressing the farmers, Chaudhary lambasted the state government and said that almost a month has passed since the declaration of the procurement process but till date nothing concrete was done either for purchase of the produce or relaxations in the specifications regarding moisture content.
The hard earned produce of the farmers was lying unattended in the grain markets but the ‘Pro-kisaan Badal government’ has not made any policy regarding purchase of the produce and lifting of the same.
At Grain Market Goraya out of 3,50,000 bags of wheat only 64,000 bags were lifted till date and payment to farmers was yet to be made. “In grain markets Phillaur and Lasara 220000 and 120000 bags were not lifted yet. Same was the case in other grain markets of the state. The uncertainty of the weather has further added to the problems of the farmers,” he said.
It is only after strong protests by the farmers and the visit of Rahul Gandhi, Vice President AICC in the various grain markets of Punjab to know about the problems being faced by the farmers that the state government was forced to release an amount of Rs 4,000 crore as payment to farmers.
PYC president also demanded that an increase of Rs 200 on the MSP, farmers should be immediately compensated for the moisture cut, immediate compensation to the families of those farmers who committed suicide.
Chaudhary announced that on May 1, PYC will hold similar protests in the remaining 12 parliament constituencies of the state.
