Panel begins hunger strike in Patiala

PATIALA: Members of the solid waste action committee went on a series of hunger strike on Monday in protest against the state government’s decision of setting up a solid waste management project in Dhudhar village.

The first day, five members of the committee sat on the strike. The committee has received support from the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda) and Panchayats of many villages situated near Dhudhar village.

Darshan Pal, president of BKU (Dakaunda) and member of the solid waste action committee, said the people of Dhudhar were already facing severe problems due to the presence of three cardboard factories, a distillery, a big poultry farm and a major sewer drain and the setting up of a solid waste plant will only add to their worries. “More than a dozen villages will be affected by the project,” he said.The affected villages will include Dudhar Dakala, Trein, Bhanri, Main, Jhandi, Kalrbheni, Jalalker and Nanasu among others.

Meanwhile, Samana MLA and cabinet minister Surjit Singh Rakhra, in whose jurisdiction the site falls, has joined the hands with the villagers and is openly opposing the project.
