AMRITSAR: The opposition Congress party on Monday held a protest demonstration, seeking to draw the government’s attention towards “deteriorating standards of school education” and lack of infrastructure in schools in rural areas of the state.
During the protest outside the office of the District Education Officer (DEO), Congress workers, led by Amritsar (rural) district Congress committee (DCC) president Gurjeet Singh Aujla, also burnt the effigy of education minister (schools) Daljit Singh Cheema. Senior party leaders, including former ministers Sardool Singh Bundala and Sukhdev Singh Shahbazpuri, former MLAs Jasbir Singh Dimpa and Harpartap Singh Ajnala, were also among the protesters.
Aujla spoke about the result of the Class-10 annual examination conducted by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) and said the poor result showed the deteriorating standards of education in the state, particularly in government schools.
Aujla claimed that out of the 3.78 lakh students who took the board examinations, around 80,000 failed in English and more than 35,000 could not clear the Punjabi language paper.
“New experiments like the Adarsh School system was tried, but without success. Instead of experimenting, the government should have concentrated on the existing schools,” Aujla said.
“In the last seven years, the SAD-BJP government has not paid attention to primary and secondary school education,” Aujla said.
The other leaders made references to those government schools that were opened for meritorious students from economically weaker families and said students in these schools too had fared poorly in the CBSE examinations for Class 12.
