Fazilka : Congress party workers were booked after they protested “police inaction under political pressure” into a murder case on Thursday night. The case pertains to a girl who had been missing for the last four days.

Following the protest, the police exhumed the body from a local shop but also booked Congress party leaders and 50-60 unidentified persons under Sections 283 (obstruction in public way), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.

Budh Singh, father of deceased Charanjit Kaur (22), said tailor Sona Singh, a married man, had an “evil eye” on his daughter who was running a beauty parlour near his shop. During the intervening night of May 30 and 31, when her family members were sleeping, Sona allegedly took his daughter to his shop and pressurised her to marry him. When she refused, he allegedly strangulated her with a piece of cloth and buried the body in his shop. Thereafter, he and his family disappeared from the village.

District Congress Committee (DCC) president Kaushal Kumar Bouk, Malkeet Singh Hira, who had contested the previous Assembly elections from Jalalabad, and other party leaders condemned the police action of registering a case against them. They alleged they had been targeted by the police allegedly at the behest of ruling party leaders out of political vendetta. The police were trying to save the culprit, they alleged.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Jalalabad, Ajmer Singh Baath, while refuting the allegation, said the accused in the case had been arrested and the body recovered and so, there was no question of any political interference and pressure.
