BATALA: It doesn’t require a Gurdaspur-style terror attack to wreck a Batala police station, pummel its cops, and leave them in shreds. Just eight or so miscreants were enough on Thursday night.
They came to free one of their companions but failed to open the lockup. Since the accused include an Akali sarpanch, the police are reluctant to lay hands on them. Around 8pm on Thursday, responding to a call, a team led by constable Gurwinder Singh had brought one Gurmeet Singh to the Qila Lal Singh police station from Dalam village on a charge of creating nuisance.
Within half an hour, six men led by sarpanch Nishan Singh barged in to take him away.
When constables Gurwinder Singh and Manjinder Singh tried to resist, the intruders bashed them up, tore their uniform, and got away in their cars. If more than a dozen policemen were at the station then as the record suggests, it’s a mystery how the assailants were able to escape.
A witness said that station house officer (SHO) Avtar Singh had rushed to the spot during the attack but, looking at who was involved, made no effort to stop it. Only after the media reported the incident to Batala SSP Harpreet Singh persons that a case under Sections 353 (criminal force to deter public servant) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against accused Gurmeet Singh, Nishan Singh, Simarjeet Singh, Amandeep Singh, Sartaj Singh, Gurtaj Singh, and an unidentified man.
