AMRITSAR: Stating that despite being a favourite location of SADBJP leaders for laying foundation stones, the Amritsar (South) constituency had been neglected for the past nine years, said Gurjit Singh Aujla, president, District Congress Committee (rural), while addressing a protest held on Monday.

District Congress Committee (rural) president Gurjeet Singh Aujla leading a protest rally in Amritsar on Monday.

City residents and Congress activists protested against the SAD-BJP government by symbolically covering the foundation stone with a sheet.

Aujla said the foundation stone on by-pass near Sultanwind road crossing was laid by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, local bodies minister Anil Joshi, revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia and chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) Inderbir Singh Bolaria during a massive rally.

“As per the foundation stone `285 crore was supposed to be spent on the installation, development and maintenance of water supply channel, sewerage, sewage treatment plant, roads and drainage, but not even a single penny was spared for the south constituency,” said Aujla.

Now, seeing their imminent end in 2017, he said, ‘gali pardhans’ of SAD-BJP combine have begun misguiding commoners and residents that crores have been released for the development of the area.

“As 2017 is nearing, SAD MLA from the Amritsar south constituency has started staging pseudo protests against his own government to clear his name in public,” he said, adding that the government is to spend `160 crore on the project.

“The rest of the amount will be collected from residents in form of new connection fees and bills by corporation in the next 10 years, whereas the SAD’s new gali pardhans are misleading people that Sukhbir has issued 207 crore for the development of the south constituency,” he claimed. He added that the protest was just a wake-up call for the SAD-BJP government.
