Faridkot : The police today used water cannons to disperse protesting Congress workers, who were marching towards the residence of Agriculture Minister Tota Singh. They planned to gherao the minister.
Congress workers assembled at the Moga Grain Market under the leadership of Indian Youth Congress chief and Gidderbaha MLA Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. They demanded the resignation of Tota Singh and a judicial probe into his alleged involvement in the multi-crore pesticide scam that led to the outbreak of whitefly attack on cotton crop.
After the protest, Warring urged party workers to march towards the residence of Tota Singh. When they broke police barricades near the grain market to reach Tota Singh’s house, the police used the water cannons to disperse the Congress workers.
To prevent the large gathering of Congress workers from breaking the law, the police had already deployed water cannons and tear gas shell machines at the site. Additional police force was summoned from Faridkot and Ferozepur districts.
Once the protesters dispersed, the police rounded up many Congress workers, including Warring, and released them near the police lines in Moga.
