GURDASPUR: The volunteers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will take out torch processions in all the mandis across the state on Monday to awaken the “sleeping government” over the financial loot of farmers at the alleged patronage of the government while procuring their basmati varieties of rice crop this season.
Aam Aadmi Party Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur said here on Sunday that he had instructed the volunteers of the party across the state to take part in the Monday’s proposed protest. Chhotepur said the government procurement agencies were directly looting the farmers by purchasing their basmati varieties of rice crop at the minimum support price (MSP) meant for the common variety of paddy.
Chhotepur questioned why the government was offering almost half the price for basmati that fetched the farmers double price during the last two procurement seasons. He said that first the government let the private players buy the basmati varieties at throw away prices and now ots procurement agencies had started purchasing basmati produce at nominal rates.
