Abohar: Sunil Jakhar, Leader of the Opposition, accompanied by sarpanches, took a whirlwind tour of canals in the Abohar division on Wednesday.
He found many bridges in dangerous condition which could invite accidents as wild shrubs had grown up on both sides of the walled canals and their lining was found damaged at many places.
The farmers told Jakhar that some work was got done through contractors, but sand was not used to strengthen banks. Poor maintenance resulted in several breaches, they claimed.
Later, while interacting with the media he said state government should utilise funds available under MGNREGA schemes to get all the canals repaired and cleaned.
The officials of Irrigation department should be made accountable for breaches in canals, he added.
