GURDASPUR: Congress workers, led by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) member Raman Bahl, held a protest outside the deputy commissioner's office here on Thursday to demand revocation of the state government's decision to include water supply and sewerage charges in the electricity bills of consumers at the rate of 2% of the total power bill.

Congressmen holding a protest outside the deputy commissioner’s office in Gurdaspur on Thursday.

Addressing the protesters, Bahl said that electricity bills during the winter season were normal, but during the summer season, these bills increased manifold, so the consumers would have to pay many times more than the routine charges for these facilities during summers.

Bahl said that many people did not avail of water supply and sewerage facilities because they had their own arrangements for them and making them pay for these facilities would be unjustified.

Bahl said that in some cases, people had two electricity connections and two electricity bills were being received by them and 2% charges would be levied on both the bills which would not be fair.

Bahl urged the municipal council to pass a resolution against this decision of the government as Sangrur municipal council had done, so that the people did not have to pay extra for water supply and sewerage.

Bahl appealed to the Punjab governor to intervene and direct the state government to withdraw this illogical and antipeople decision.

The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the governor through the deputy commissioner.
