Ludhiana : Rajwinder Khwajke (38), Sarpanch (Congress) of Khwajke village, was shot dead by four unidentified persons at Gill village during a wedding here today. Around 4.30 pm, four persons fired shots at Rajwinder and his friend Balwinder Singh from Bhawanigarh (Haryana) from a close range.

Rajwinder, who received five bullet injuries (one in neck, two in abdomen and two in arms), was rushed to Deep Hospital, from where he was referred to the DMCH. Around 6.45 pm, doctors at the DMCH declared him dead. The condition of Balwinder is said to be stable.

As soon as the news spread, hundreds of Congress men, supporters and students gathered outside the Emergency gate of the DMCH. A heavy police force was deployed on the hospital premises to avoid any unruly incident.

An eyewitness of the incident at Gill village told The Tribune, “It was the wedding of Manpreet Singh Grewal, block samiti member, Akali Dal, and leading Punjabi singer Babbu Maan was performing. Many political leaders had turned up. Maan was performing his last song and most of the guests had left when suddenly from nowhere, four persons appeared and fired at Rajwinder from a close range. Five bullets were fired at Khwajke.”

On being asked if it was a “gang war” as many cases were registered against Rajwinder, a Congress leader said there was no argument and all were in a jovial mood at the wedding. “Nothing of that sort happened and Rajwinder was the lone target,” he said.
