LUDHIANA: Congress councillors on Thursday said the Punjab government has invited trouble by introducing a new committee wherein halka (constituency) in-charges have been given the powers to allocate development works in the city.

In a press conference, the Congress councillors said they will not allow the halka incharges to inaugurate development works in their wards. They warned that there can be a law and order problem if the halka in-charges try to get the credit of works for which estimates were prepared by them.

District Congress Committee president Gurpreet Gogi said the SAD-BJP government was playing game with their councillors and was trying to get the credit of the works for which the estimates were made by them.

He said the halka in-charges have been given powers despite the fact that do not know anything about their wards.

Leader of Congress in MC House, Hemraj Aggarwal, said they were not against development but were against the procedure being adopted. He said the elected representatives were being ignored and the government had given powers to those who had not been elected.

Balkar Singh, member, MC finance and contracts committee (F&CC), said, “Everything is being done in a secretive manner. No project can be passed without getting the nod of the F&CC but the files are being sent directly to the DC, who has been selected as the chairman of the committee. How will the MC pay for the projects which have not been cleared by F&CC, he questioned.
