Gurdaspur : Political foes since long — the Congress and the BJP— joined hands to protest the alleged high-handedness of the SAD MLA GS Babbehali and laid siege to the police station for three hours.
A local resident Kulwant Singh was booked under the SC Atrocities Act yesterday. This was the trigger for both the parties to come on a single platform following which scores of workers blocked the road in front of the main post office adjoining the police station.
Raman Bahl, PPCC general secretary, claimed that Singh had been booked by the police following instructions from Babbehali. He claimed that for the past several months Kulwant had been opposing the “MLA’s move to encroach upon his plot of land in the Gopal Nagar locality.”
“This is a case of vendetta politics. The MLA had asked Kulwant to vacate the plot of land but when he refused the legislator asked the police to book him in a police case following which a case under the Act was registered against him. SSP, Jagdeep Singh Hundal went out of the way to follow the MLAs diktats,” said Bahl.
The SSP, however, denied Bahl’s assertions. “Kulwant has been booked after an inquiry was conducted by a DSP. We only act on the genuine demands of the MLA, not otherwise,” he said.
Gurdaspur BJP district chief Ashok Vaid, too lashed out at the police for “helping the MLA create an intimidating atmosphere in the city.”
Babbehali could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
