Farmers protest against Punjab government

SANGRUR: Large number of farmers under the banner of Bharatiya Kissan Union (BKU) protested outside the district administration complex in Sangrur on Wednesday.

The farmers raised antigovernment slogans and demanded to waive off their loans. Joginder Singh, state president of BKU, said their main demand was that all the private or governmental loans outstanding against farmers should be waived off.

The Farmers also demanded that farmer suicide victim families should be given compensation of `5 lakh each along with job of one of member of their families. They also demanded the government to ban auction of land, houses and property of a farmers who failed to repay their debt. They demanded that the state should confer ownership rights to cultivators, solve the problem of stray cattle and make better policies so that farming could become a profitable venture.

Singh said their protest would end on Thursday and they would keep organising such protests if the government did not listen to their demands soon.
