CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh police on Wednesday used water cannons to disperse the workers of the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) who were protesting against the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government for its alleged failure to deliver justice to the victims of firing at Behbal Kalan in Faridkot while protesting the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib last year. The workers were led by its Punjab Youth Congress president Amarpreet Singh Lally. They claimed that they also resorted to mild lathicharge and injured a few.
The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), in a statement, accusing the police of high-handedness and demanded immediate and stringent action against police officers responsible for the “attack”.
Nearly 70 of them, including Lally, were detained by the police while they were marching towards chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s residence from Congress Bhawan here. Deputy superintendent of police (central) Ram Gopal said they had to use water cannons as the protesters were heading towards Punjab CM’s residence. “We detained 70 protesters, including 10 women, as a preventive measure. They were produced before the SDM and later released,” he said.
