Jalandhar : Mystery deepens over the death of Mohit Kumar, a cook of Phillaur Akali leader Baldev Khaira. He died of an “accidental” gunshot at Baldev’s house in the district’s Khaira village yesterday.

Mohit (23) was a native of Uttar Pradesh. The SAD leader had hired him five days ago.

His postmortem was conducted at the Civil Hospital Ludhiana, from where his family took the body to UP for the last rites.

Opposition parties have demanded a judicial inquiry.

“One of my gunmen told me that Mohit came in their room with tea. At that time, my other gunman Vikram, whose service revolver was on the bed, was in the bathroom. While Mohit was making the bed, the revolver fell and got fired, unfortunately killing my cook,” Khaira claimed.

His political opponents are not ready to accept his claim that the falling revolver could pierce the cook’s chest.

Jarnail Singh, SHO, Phillaur PS, had a different story to tell. “The revolver had not fallen down. Mohit was fiddling with it when the bullet hit him.”

Congress general secretary Vikramjit Chaudhary called Khaira’s claims a cover-up. “How can a bullet from a falling revolver pierce a standing man’s chest? Why are the versions of police and Khaira varying?” he said.

The SAD leader retorted, “Any claims by my opponents are aimed at tarnishing my image.”
