MUKTSAR: The police have booked a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) worker for allegedly firing in the air during a cricket tournament, being organised by Gidderbaha MLA and Indian Youth Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring at Doda on Wednesday night.
The incident took place at about 8pm after a match ended. The Congress workers, led by Warring, also staged a protest in front of the Kotbhai police station on Wednesday night demanding arrest of the accused.
On a complaint by Jaspreet Singh, a resident of Bhalaiana, the police have registered a case under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC against Harisharan Singh, a resident of Luhara village. The accused was arrested and released later on bail as the offence was bailable.
The complainant had also mentioned the name of Prabhjot Singh, son of the SAD’s Gidderbaha halqa in-charge Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon, two others by name and some unidentified persons in his complaint. But no case has been registered against them.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Gill said that there was no common intention so the case has not been registered against other persons mentioned in the complaint. “The accused opened fire after his team won the match,” he said.
Dhillon said that the man, who opened fire, was an Akali worker as he was bearing a SAD badge at that time. However, he said that his son didn’t know him. “My son even talked to Raja Warring after the incident and told him that he doesn’t know the man,” he said.
