Oppn leaders targets Modi on note ban

BJALANDHAR : The leaders of the Congress and the Communit Party of India (Marxist) used the platform of 113th Shaheed Parivar Fund function held here on Sunday to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his demonetisation move.
The event is organised every year by region’s prominent media house to distribute relief material among the terrorismhit families.
Senior Congress leader from Punjab, Sunil Jhakar, said due to demonetisation, various businesses have shut down and industries are facing a big loss.
“Modi has been avoiding any discussion in the Parliament on the issue. Even in Punjab, the opposition has never been allowed to speak,” he said. “Anybody raising questions on the working of the government is being tagged as anti-national,” he said.
Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh expressed concern on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. “All the sections should come together to root out terrorism from Jammu-Kashmir.
They should not play politics on the subject,” said Virbhadra.
He criticised the decision of the BJP government to recall ₹500 and ~1,000 currency from the market without proper planning.
CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said nation was currently facing a financial emergency-like situation. He said, “We want Prime Minister to speak in the Parliament, but it seems he does not want to face the opposition.”
Himachal Pradesh governor Acharya Dev Vrat, Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh, Punjab director general of police Suresh Arora and others also addressed the gathering.
