Punjab govt likely to start tea leaf and sugar at subsidise rate

Chandigarh(Narinder Jagga): To fulfil the need of Punjabi kitchen, the Punjab Government is likely to start subsidise tea leaf and sugar. A proposal in this regard has been sent to the finance department for financial approval. Interestingly, the Government has not arranged any fund for this cause in the current Budget, but the Director Food and Civil Supply Madam Anadita Mitra told that the Government has offered required fund for this purpose. 20 gram tea leaf for each member and 1 kg sugar for each family will be given in this scheme.

For Atta Dal scheme now Smart Ration Card Scheme, the Punjab Government had kept reserve Rs 500 crore for last year, in which sugar, tea leaf, Atta and Dal were to be given to the beneficiaries. But the Government could able to distribute wheat only. The Government had decided to add the beneficiaries by linking the Aadhar number of the recipients to these subsidies and benefits. The Council of Ministers of Punjab has already approved such proposal as it was also a part of Congress Manifesto.

According to information, for the distribution of subsidise tea leaf and sugar, the PUNSUP has been chosen as noddle agency. Sources in the department told that a meeting is to be hold for the finalisation of price of tea leaf and sugar, while the department has proposed 50 percent subsidy on such items. Notable, the Centre Government gives subsidised sugar to all the beneficiaries under the Antodaya Ann Yojana for poorest of the poor section and for such purpose the GOI has released Rs 5.58 crore as its part to the Punjab. But the State have total 1.34 crore beneficiaries (34 lacs families), to whom the benefits are to be given, including Antodya Yojana.
