Condemning the murder of young Congress leader Ricky Dulat in Sangrur on Sunday night and the attack on Congress office in Batala, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh on Tuesday urged Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to depute a special team in Punjab. “It is not that the Congress workers can’t hit back. In fact, they can hit back hard, but we don’t want them to take law into their hands lest it leads to a civil war like situation”, Capt Singh said in his letter, while seeking urgent attention of the Home Minister requesting him to ensure that Congress workers are not provoked beyond their patience. Captain revealed that during the last few weeks, several attacks have been reported against Congress workers that led to the death of three of them while several others got injured.
On the evening of Deepawali, he said, two Congress activists Joga Singh and Rajinder Kumar were killed in Dera Baba Nanak area while several others were injured in full public view. “The irony is that police have been acting as mute spectators and supporting the Akalis”, he remarked. Amarinder also said that the situation has created fear among the people, particularly among the minorities.
Captain alleged that the organising general secretary of the District Congress Committee Sangrur, Ricky Dulat was killed by a cousin of the state PWD Minister Parminder Dhindsa with support from the police. He said police have registered the FIR only after PCC general secretary Arvind Khanna threatened mass protest. The PCC President said, the Congress office at Batala was attacked by the Akali goons and two persons including Batala Youth Congress president Sanjeev Sharma and another activist Sunny Sekhri were seriously injured. Foreseeing more such violenvce,Amarinder brought to the notice of the Union Home Minister that the Deputy CM after assuming power has sent a special team to West Bengal to study the Communists’ way of fighting elections.
