The Punjab Congress may announce 70 to 80 party candidates for the assembly elections. According to senior party functionaries, the Congress 11-member poll committee would meet here next week. Applications by ticket hopefuls submitted to the DCC offices have reached here. The PCC has also received the reports of AICC members who have served as observers for each constituency.

Party sources said once the Election Committee meets, it would forward a panel or a single name, as per the reports submitted by the observers, to the five-member screening committee.

Sources said the Punjab Congress was keen to have 70-80 seats announced by December-end or the beginning of January. As the SAD-BJP has finalised most of their candidates who have informally begun campaigning, the PCC wants the first list out quickly.

Vice-president Laal Singh said the party had already complained to the Election Commission against the blatant use of official machinery and had appealed for preponement of the elections.
