The Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh, who had earlier taken stern action against party rebels, on Sunday expelled Capt MS Bedi of Fazilka and Ajinder Pal Singh of Shutrana from the Congress for alleged anti-party activities.
Captain Bedi, grandson of former MLA and late Rajinder Singh Bedi, was an aspirant of the Congress ticket from Fazilka.
Singh, who is a member of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, is contesting against the official party nominee Nirmal Singh in Shutrana and has been expelled for six years.
Similarly Raj Buksh, president of Jalalabad block 1, and Tarsem Lal, president of Jalalabad Block 2, were also expelled form the Congress for allegedly canvassing for rebel Congress candidate HR Joson, who is contesting as an Independent from Jalalabad.
On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Fazilka Surjeet Kumar Jyani got a shot in the arm when it was stated that Dera Sacha Sauda sect of Sirsa had extended open support to him.
It was revealed that the sect had reportedly told its followers (Premis) to vote for Jyani as they consider him a good and clean candidate. Similar claims about the Dera stance was also claimed by a supporter of Congress candidate Minder Rinwa. It is another matter that the Dera had been keeping its cards close to the chest right till Sunday evening, just a day ahead of polling in the state.
Meanwhile, Jasvinder Singh who is contesting from Fazilka as an Independent, failed to get any relief from the District and Sessions Court, Ferozepur, on his anticipatory bail application in a case registered at Thana Sadar, Fazilka, for attempt to kidnap and illegal possession of arms. The court issued notice to the state and fixed January 31 for hearing the application.
Surprisingly, Jasvinder Singh was canvassing and reaching out to the voters of the area under police security provided by the Election Commission.
