Senior Congress leaders today met the Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohit Chaudhary and brought to his notice the harassment and intimidation of the party workers besides the registration of false cases against the candidates and their relatives.

The delegation was led by vice president Punjab Congress and the Chairman of the Campaign Committee, Ludhiana, Mr Laal Singh and included the DCC urban and rural presidents Pawan Dewan, Milkiat Dakha, MLAs Surinder Dawer, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Rakesh Pandey and former MLA Milkiat Singh Birmi, Jassi Khangura and others.

The memorandum said, “we want to bring to your notice several cases of police high-handedness clearly aimed at harassing and intimidating the Congress workers and contestants so that they are made to exit from the ongoing Municipal Corporation elections”.

Giving details, the memorandum said, “a false case under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against our candidate from Ward 63, Talwinder Singh Taggar. This was clearly a false case aimed at involving Mr Taggar so that he is not able to contest the elections”.

In another similar incident, a case was registered against MP Singh Jawadi, the son of Satinder Jawadi, who is contesting the MC elections from Ward 59, under section 307 of the IPC.

The memorandum revealed that the police was used in demolishing several structures in the colony being developed by Congress candidate Maharaj Singh Rajee who is contesting from Ward 28 against Harish Rai Dhanda.

The party said, “our candidate from Ward Number 2, Rajkumari Bhasin is being continuously harassed and threatened with subtle warnings issued by the police personnel as well. Her posters were torn apart and the police did not take any action”.

In Ward 71, the Congress alleged, “Ms Puja Sharma, wife of Anil Pappi is also being continuously harassed and threatened to withdraw and the police are not providing any aid and assistance”.

The party said, these were just five specific examples for police reference. Besides, it added, the police are trying to intimidate the Congress workers and the supporters of the Congress candidates to discourage them from campaigning.

The party appealed to the police to ensure free and fair campaigning and electioneering besides free and fair elections as the Police have an important role. “Please ensure that the SHOs do not keep on summoning people for one reason or other in an apparent bid to build pressure on them with the sole motive to scare and discourage them from supporting the Congress candidates”, the memorandum said.
