One-third posts of teachers lying vacant in Punjab schools

Ferozepur: With about one-third vacant posts in the Punjab Education Department, the status of education system could be gauged, said president of Punjab Education Reforms Committee Jaswant Singh Gill and state spokesman Raj Kishore Kalra.
They said that Punjab’s 17th position of achievements in education and its results, were a cause of concern but it was unfortunate that nobody was paying any attention to know its root-cause. The major reasons of falling standards of secondary education in Punjab were that high and secondary schools were being treated as ‘heirless’ as administrative control of 622 secondary and about 700 high schools, had been handed over to principals and headmasters of the adjoining schools. The said that education in more than 1300 schools had been affected. At present, out of 1723 posts of principals, 622 and of headmasters, out of 1742, 700 posts were lying vacant.
Talking about the vacant posts in Education Department of secondary under temporary plan, they said that there were 67590 posts but only 48695 posts had been filled and the remaining 18695 posts were lying vacant, and in case the remaining posts were also included, the figure would cross 30,000 vacant posts. According to Finance Department, under non-plan scheme, the sanctioned posts of principals were 1,238 against which only 833 posts had been filled and the remaining 405 posts were lying vacant and by including the sanctioned posts of other schemes, the total posts were 1723, out of which 1100 had been filled and 623 posts were vacant, they added.
Likewise, under the non-plan scheme, the sanctioned posts of headmasters were 1325, out of which 926 were filled. In all the schemes, the total posts were 1742 and more than 700 were lying vacant.
Regarding the posts of lecturers, the sanctioned posts were around 12000, out of which more than 5200 were lying vacant. In the single non-plan scheme, the sanctioned posts of lecturers were 9433, out of 3890 were vacant. Similarly, out of total 43000 posts of headmasters, more than 11,000 were vacant. In non-temporary scheme, the figure was 29165, out of which 6239 posts were vacant.
As per the in-depth study of Education Department secondary, about 35000 to 40000 posts were lying vacant of principals, headmasters, lecturers, masters and 57 different categories.The Education Reforms Committee demanded from the Punjab Government that it should not believe in simply working on papers. It should bring practical reforms in education.
