CChandigarh : Punjab Congress Legislature Party Leader Sunil Jakhar today claimed that the Human Resource Development Ministry would send a fact-finding committee to Punjab to probe the alleged embezzlement of central funds in the purchase of books for schoolchildren.

In a statement here, Jakhar said he had led a delegation of senior Punjab Congress leaders, including MP Ravneet Bittu and Charanjit Bajwa, to meet HRD Minister Pallam Raju today.

He said the delegation apprised the minister of irregularities in the purchase of library books and science kits for government schools. He said Raju had assured the delegation that he would send a team to get firsthand information of the matter and that appropriate action would be taken once the facts were verified.

Jakhar claimed that even the Punjab Government had also admitted to embezzlement of the Sarv Siksha Abhiyaan funds, but it was trying to cover up the entire issue by appointing a retired judge to probe the scam. He demanded an independent probe by a central agency.

The release said the HRD minister had assured the delegation that while funds were being made available to Punjab to eradicate illiteracy, the Centre would not allow any bungling in these funds.

The CLP leader also told Raju that apart from embezzlement of funds, books meant for adults with vulgar content were sent to primary schools.
