CHANDIGARH: Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira said decline in sex ratio in Bathinda district goes on to prove that ‘Nanhi-Chhaan’ founded by Harsimrat Kaur MP, is less of a fight against female foeticide and more of a political campaign for her image makeover.

“As per the recently released Primary Census Abstract (PCA) 2011, Punjab has  sex ratio of 895 girls/ 1000 male children as compared to 876/1000 in 2001, a gain of 19 points, though it is yet 48 points less than the national average of 943/1000. But what is most disappointing and alarming are the figures of Bathinda District, which has recorded a decline of two points in the sex ratio from 870 girls to 868 girls per 1000 male children. Incidentally, Mukatsar the home district of Badal clan is no better and is amongst the lowest four in terms of sex ratio in the state, at 831/1000.”

“The above stated startling figures of decline in sex ratio in Bathinda and Mukatsar the home district of the Badal family amongst the lowest four, speak volumes of the so called ‘Nanhi- Chhaan’ programme of Smt. Harsimrat Kaur MP.    It is now abundantly clear that the said pet project of ‘Nanhi-Chhaan’ has utterly failed to improve the sex ratio or prevent female foeticide in the state.”

“More stunning are the facts, that although Punjab as a whole improved marginally with 19 points since the last census of 2001, Bathinda the constituency represented by Harsimrat Kaur on the contrary saw a decline of two points. Similar is the case of Mukatsar with a sex ratio of 831/1000, i.e. 112 points below the national average.”

“As per the data of Primary Census Abstract (PCA), the decline of sex ratio in Bathinda cast a direct shadow on the ‘Nanhi-Chhaan’ programme of Harsimrat Kaur. What is more intriguing is the fact that Smt. Harsimrat Kaur besides involving a NGO in the said programme had the full backing of the govt. of Punjab. Huge sums of public exchequer money have been spent on funding the ‘Nanhi- Chhaan’ programme for the last six years, merely because the daughter in law of the CM was involved.”

“The said census data goes on to prove that the ‘Nanhi-Chhaan’ programme launched with pomp and show with the support of govt., is less to do with female foeticide and is more of a political stunt to enhance the image of Harsimrat Kaur.

Khaira urged Bathinda MP to explain to her electorate, why the sex ratio has dropped in her district?

“So should the CM explain for the dismal figures in his home district,” he said.
