Sangrur : ETT teachers posted at various schools under zila parishads and municipal councils staged a dharna near Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa’s house here. They blocked traffic for around two hours.

The protesters, who gathered there under the banner of ETT Teachers’ Union, Punjab, wanted to gherao the residence of the minister, but the police stopped them from going there by putting up barricades. These teachers had come from Sangrur, Barnala, Mansa and Patiala districts. They said the schools working under zila parishads and municipal councils should be brought under the Education Department.

Jyoti Verma, a teacher from Government Primary School, Gaggarpur, fell unconscious during the dharna due to scorching heat. She was taken to the local civil hospital from where she was discharged after two hours, said Sukhvir Singh, district president of the ETT Teachers Union, Sangrur.
