Chandigarh : With chances of former Union Minister Manish Tewari getting the Congress ticket from Anandpur Sahib turning bleak, focus is back on fielding a fresh Jat Sikh face or OBC candidate from the seat.

Senior OBC leaders have stepped up their efforts to reach out to senior party leaders to air their grievance regarding non-representation of OBC candidates in the allocation of 13 LS seats in the state.

While objecting to single-panel name of Manish Tewari, the name of Punjab Youth Congress president Amarpreet Lally was specially discussed by the party president in yesterday’s central election committee meet. Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ambika Soni is learnt to have supported Lally’s candidature.

“Though Kewal Dhillon remains a strong contender for the Sangrur seat, nomination of Hindu face or Jat face from Sangrur will have direct bearing on the Anandpur seat. If the party fields Hindu face from Sangrur, there are strong chances of Jat Sikh face being nominated from the Anandpur Sahib seat,” a senior leader said.

After failing to get Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu nominated from Chandigarh, Navjot Singh Sidhu’s meeting with Rahul Gandhi is also being seen in light of reports of party contemplating to field Sidhu’s wife from Bathinda or Anandpur Sahib.
