SANGRUR: In a setback to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), former Sangrur MLA Surinderpal Sibia, who unsuccessfully contested the state assembly elections from Barnala segment, on Friday, re-joined the Congress in the presence of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh.
In 2016, the former MLA had resigned from the Congress after he was denied a ticket in state assembly poll. Later, he had joined SAD. Sibia, a Jat Sikh, was a contender for Sangrur seat, where former MP Vijay Inder Singla had been given the party ticket.
In a statement, Congress candidate from Sangrur, Kewal Singh Dhillon said Sibia is a hard working man and his joining the Congress will strengthen the party in the region.
“There is Congress wave in Punjab due to pro-people policies of Capt Amarinder Singh. SAD will not get even a single seat in Lok Sabha elections,” said Dhillon.
