Jalandhar : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) vice president Himanshu Pathak on Monday blamed BJP candidate from Gurdaspur Sunny Deol of running an unauthorised and unaccounted paid campaign on social media major platform Facebook from the page named as Fans of Sunny. Pathak said that the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Fans-of-Sunny-Deol-361309774511046 was created on April 30 and lakhs of money was spent within five days to reach 7 to 8 lakh voters on this page in the constituency.

Addressing a press conference Himanshu Pathak said that it was clear violation of Model Code of conduct as promotion on social media was allowed only from official social media accounts of the candidate, which were mentioned in nomination papers (Affidavit) of the candidate. Pathak while providing proof of the Facebook page of Sunny Deol said that it was mandatory that promotion on social media was approved by the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC).

“Even the expense on the promotion should also be included in the election expenditure. This election campaign of Sunny Deol may even exceed the election expenditure limit given by the commission ie Rs 70 lakh”, he said. Pathak said he had made a complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer Punjab in this regard. Sunny Deol’s nomination should be cancelled for providing false information in the affidavit, he added.
