Abohar : Former Akali minister Inderjit Singh Zira, who joined the Congress a few years ago and was appointed coordinator for Congress election campaign, on Tuesday said Ferozepur was not going to be a cakewalk for Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Congress candidate and two-time MP Sher Singh Ghubaya would give him a tough fight, he said.

Zira said heavy polling in the segments dominated by Rai Sikhs and Sikh migrants from west Punjab might go in favour of Ghubaya. “I visited dozens of villages while campaigning till May 17 and noticed that Sikhs who had migrated from Lahore and other areas in west Punjab had a lot of resentment against Akali Dal top brass over sacrilege incidents and anti-farmer policies. People in Abohar were even otherwise unhappy with Sukhbir and former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for total neglect of the area during their 10-year rule,” Zira alleged.

Trashing exit polls, Zira said the Congress would win seats more than the pollsters were predicting in Punjab. Ghubaya might get elected for the third consecutive term with a margin of 50,000 or more votes, he claimed.
