Gurdaspur : Former MP Sunil Jakhar addressed Congress workers’ meetings in Pathankot, Dinanagar and Gurdaspur with the focus remaining on the reasons of his defeat at the hands of the BJP’s Sunny Deol.
The PPCC chief is out in the field, intermingling with his supporters, barely a week after the election results were out. Even his detractors in the BJP admit that “it is a graceful and politically correct move on his part to stay in touch with his workers just days after he was pushed into political wilderness”.
The former parliamentarian, while addressing a gathering in Pathankot, said he respected the mandate of the voters. “I am here to thank my workers who worked wholeheartedly. They are a source of strength for me. On my part, I will stand by them through thick and thin. Despite knowing that it would be an uphill task to match the celebrity status of the BJP candidate, my colleagues stood by me like a rock,” he maintained.
He also met MLAs and discussed the events of the last few days threadbare.
The consensus among his loyalists is that it was an insurmountable task for him to counter the appeal of the popular film star, but at the same time it has also emerged that his complete dependence on all the seven MLAs did not work to his advantage.
“Apart from the actor’s appeal, his total and absolute reliance on his legislators is what did him in. Consequently, he failed to see eye to eye with leaders of groups inimical to the elected representatives following which he lost out on their votes,” said a dissident leader.
Apparently in what is a compliment to Jakhar’s stature as an experienced leader, it has surfaced that the BJP conducted a couple of in-house surveys which concluded that only a celebrity candidate could get past him.
