Non-resident Indians can now get their names registered in the electoral rolls, with the amended legislation coming into force Thursday.

A press release by the law and justice ministry Thursday said the government has issued the necessary notification bringing the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2010 into force on Feb 10.

'The amending act confers voting rights to citizens of India who are absenting from their place or ordinary residence in India owing to their employment, education or otherwise outside India (whether temporarily or not),' the release said.

It said that Indian nationals, not residing in India, will be entitled to have their names registered in the electoral rolls in the assembly or parliamentary constituency in which their place of residence is in India as mentioned in their passport is located.

'The overseas Indians can now furnish the documents self attested by them,' said the press release.
